Even as a student at the VŠMU in Bratislava, tenor Juraj Hollý established himself on the international scene, where he still works today. In 2010, he won a special prize at the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna, which secured his career debut at the Vienna Kammeroper in the role of Gernando in Haydn’s opera The Deserted Island.
This was followed by victories at the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary, at the Mozart Competition in Prague, and the final of the Pietro Antonio Cesti International Singing Competition in Innsbruck.
After the studies he applied for a place in the opera studio in Cologne, Germany. Here he introduced himself to the audience as Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, the Prince in Cinderella, or Seppel in the opera fairy tale der Räuber Hotzenplotz.
The following season he accepted an engagement at the Koblenz Opera, where for three seasons he played all the main tenor roles, among others Nemorino (G. Donizetti: The Drink of Love), Tamino (W. A. Mozart: The Magic Flute), Count Almaviva (G. Rossini: The Barber of Seville). or Roderick Usher (Ph. Glass: The house of Usher).
The 2017/2018 season meant a transfer to the north of Germany to the city of Lübeck, where he achieved great success especially as Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Barbiere from Seville, Cassio in Verdi’s Otello and the Swan in the stage version of Orff’s Carmina Burana. He ended the season as a guest at the National Theater in Mannheim in the role of Don Ottavio in the opera Don Giovanni by W. A. Mozart.
From the 2018/2019 season, Juraj became a member of the ensemble of the National Theater in Mannheim after the successful premiere of the aforementioned Don Giovanni. To date, he has made his debut here in the role of the Duke in Verdi’s opera Rigoletto, as well as the Prince in Prokofiev’s Love for Three Oranges, or Ernesto in Donizetti’s comedy Don Pasquale.
In addition, he has performed in opera houses in the Czech Republic (Prague, Brno, Ostrava), the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Groeningen), Belgium (Alden Biesen) and even Belarus (Minsk). Also worth mentioning is the tour of Japan, where Juraj performed in the role of Tamina in several Japanese cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagano). He also appeares on our stages, especially in the Prague National Theater and the Slovak National Theater, namely in the characters of Count Almaviva, Don Ottavio and Ferrando, but also in Košice, where he debuted in the title role of Roberto Devereux in Donizetti’s opera of the same name. In Košice, the audience saw him as Alfredo in La Traviata, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto and Roberto Devereux in G. Donizetti’s opera of the same name.
His upcoming debuts are as Shepherd in Szymanowski’s King Roger, Percy in Donizetti’s opera Anna Bolena or Edwin in a concert performance of Emmerich Kalman’s operette Csardas Princess.
In the upcoming season, Juraj will perform the role of Robert Dudley in Donizetti’s opera Maria Stuarda at Hungarian State Opera Budapest.
